Harlekin Studio Opera made their debut with this homespun Opera - constructed from an amalgamation of well known choruses and arias. Produced in only 4 months with a group of people who had never met before (Not forgetting the director also demanded a life sized elephant and large flock of birds!), this project was a dynamic and exciting start for our community opera company.
It was an enormous privilege for us to have Rose Furlonger and Glynis leading the way with our props and puppetry department. Member's also chipped in where they could and we were able to create a very real feeling of the dysfunctional, fictional town of Nacht.
Our elephant was aptly named 'Tuscanini' and was operated by four of our members who handled the task admirably, and can now all add "elephant handler" to their CVs!
We were delighted to work with local costume legend David Gibson who made the biggest dress anyone has ever seen for our Queen of the Night, Rosie Simpson. He was also responsible for bespoke costumes for Sarastro (Jamie Whitfield), Elettra (Jolanda Grijpstra) and the little Prince and Princess (Lucy 9, Reuben 7).
The performance took place at the Exchange theatre in North Shields in May 2019 to a full house.
