Visual Arts Consultant
Ian Murray is an Architect practicing in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. With a specialism in housing, his primary career focus and drive is to enable the creation of convivial neighbourhoods which foster a sense of community, respect for the natural environment and resources, and meets one of societies most basic needs - shelter - whilst also striving for that illusive phenomenon - delight!
Ian Graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2001 with a 1st class Honours in Architectural Studies and considers his architectural education as a period of experimentation and exploration not only where his architectural ‘voice’ was germinated, but also enabled him to explore the interface of architecture and other art forms which interest him.
Focused upon his interest in the experimental and media arts and the increasing impact of digital media upon the traditional networks of society, his thesis focused on a proposal for a media art 'laboratory' in Newcastle's Ouseburn area, which fused together laboratories, start up space, ateliers, exhibition and performance space focused around sound, theatre, performance, and video, all masterplanned into a vibrant and densely urban setting of interrelated creative and recreation facilities, and town houses, reviving the once burgeoning industrial valley into a hub of creative experimentation suitable for the digital age.
During this period, Ian absorbed much new media art and subsequently assisted in the promotion of international travelling musicians and performance artists across a range of media, enriching the cultural diversity within his home city. In his spare time, today Ian is tentatively experimenting with his own musical 'voice' with a range of traditional and ancient instruments such as erhu, kalimba, ocarina and harp fused together with contemporary synthesisers, samplers and digital processing, exploring the overlap between acoustic and electric, organic and digital, the premeditated and spontaneous.
